Laser Liposuction vs. Traditional Liposuction
Is there any reason to have traditional liposuction now that laser liposuction is all the rage? Should everyone just automatically opt for laser liposuction? Both types of liposuction have pros and cons, and areas where one is the better choice than the other.
Risks of Laser Liposuction
Most traditional liposuction carries the risks associated with any major surgery because of the general anesthetic required. But with laser liposuction, the patient remains awake and aware, with only a local anesthetic and anesthetic that’s injected with the tumescent fluid where the fat is to be removed. The procedure is still painless, and there’s no need to recover from general anesthesia. New developments in laser lipo don’t even require an incision, so no type of anesthetic is used at all.
Healing and Recovery Time from Laser Liposuction
Traditional liposuction usually makes it necessary for the person to take time off work and most regular physical activities from several days to a week, and sometimes more. It depends on where the fat was removed and the amount of bruising and pain the person has, which can vary. Larger areas such as the abdomen can require up to three weeks of downtime.
Laser liposuction is done through a smaller incision and the tube that’s inserted (the cannula) doesn’t have to be jerked, pulled and moved back and forth vigorously to break up the fat. The laser dissolves and destroys the fat cells, melting them, and the liquid is vacuumed out gently. This reduces the tissue trauma, pain, bruising and swelling that often occur with traditional lipo.
The laser itself also fosters minimized pain and swelling, as well as less bleeding. So complications occur less often with laser liposuction, and often a person can go back to regular activity in a day or two. The newest lipo that doesn’t require an incision has no downtime or recovery time at all because there’s nothing to heal from. The laser is moved over the skin, and the “melted” fat is reabsorbed into the body.
Results of Laser Liposuction
Liposuction is the most common cosmetic procedure because of the dramatic and instant results a person sees. With laser liposuction, the results can appear even more natural because the procedure can be done with the patient standing in some cases. This gives the doctor a better idea of the finished result and allows for a more sculpted appearance. Laser lipo can also be used in small places that traditional lipo cannot, like some areas of the face, for instance.
The laser can also help the skin to tighten more, as well as tighten more rapidly, once the procedure is done.
With the minimized pain, swelling and bruising, the faster recovery, and a gentler procedure combined with the slightly lower cost of laser liposuction, you might wonder why anyone would ever want to go through the traditional procedure.
Unfortunately, laser liposuction isn’t really well-suited for larger areas of the body. It can be used, but for the best results over a large area traditional lipo still typically shows better results than laser liposuction.
